Standard American Diet (SAD), it is sad

Many have heard the term "eat responsibly" but little actually do eat responsibly. The standard american diet causes many diseases today such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The main reason people are eating so irresponsibly is because healthy food is too expensive and junk food is cheaper; therefore more people are buying the cheaper food since it is more accessible. The correct solution to this issue is for the federal government to take action. In order to save the standard american diet from the corruption of the food industry is to subsidize healthy food and tax unhealthy food. Many studies have shown from various sources that if healthier foods are less expensive then the consumption and purchase of them increases and junk food consumption decreases. This proposition not only will help healthy choices but the obesity epidemic will start to decrease, rather than increase as it has been doing quite exceedingly over the past years. Plus this decrease in health risks will cause a major decline in health care costs, which can save billions of dollars. The money derived from the the taxation can be used to provide the subsidy for healthier alternatives.

characterized as healthy foods.

We tend to consume "healthy foods" just because we are told to. Half of the time we don't even know why we're eating that certain healthy food. All we know is that because we ate that healthy food our bodies will become healthy. That isn't true, we need to learn to balance our fruits and vegetables into our diet. Consuming certain vegetables and fruits to benefit our body not just because we are told to but because we know how it is beneficial to our body. Most of us don't care and won't try to make an effort to eat a vegetable or a fruit unless our parents force us to eat it. That shouldn't be the only way we consume our healthy foods. We should voluntarily want to eat them and know how they are beneficial to our body.

My research paper

Im doing my research paper of genetically modified foods which is fairly new in todays society. The bad things about it though is we don't know know if the foods we eat are genetically modified or not. There is no law saying it has to be printed on the foods. So is that a big danger? People say there are harmful effects of consuming foods that have been modified but there is no actually effect, people are just assuming. Genetically modifying foods is when we fix the DNA of a particular food and fix it to give it different traits like being immune to pathogens, which in the long run could benefit us. So is genetically modifying our food all that bad?

society leading cause of obesity?

People always talk about how the reason people are obese is because of fast foods, which is true but what about the people that can't afford healthy food from the market and have to buy fast food all the time? there are a lot of people like that and they arnt just going to starve themselves. society always talks about how people need to cut back on eating fast food but yet don't do anything about the problem. They should lower the prices of the healthy food they want people to eat and raise the prices of fast food so those kind of people would have to be forced to eat the healthier food. Instead society just sits back and talks about the problem like those people who can barely afford food are going to come up with the money and buy the good food. Our society doesn't him about that kind of stuff. Yes many people just choose to rather eat fast food bc it probably taste better but some people just don't have that option. That healthy food may be a luxury to some people and they wish they could get but financially can't.

Unveiling the Secret

One day, my dad and I were watching a movie and one of the character was preparing a meal for family. Set in the developing country of Vietnam, the man had to slit the chicken's throat himself in order to have chicken meat to eat. Seeing me squirming in disgust, my dad asked if I would ever have the guts to do that. Of course, I said no. He then shared how when he used to live in Vietnam, he'd have to do that himself to get meat for his family.
Now I wonder, why do we not have the ability to kill our own food? Isn't it in our genes to hunt? Predators in the wild do it. Why are we so detached from the production of our food? Why can we eat something, yet flinch when we have to see it get killed. (Whenever my sister buys live shrimps home to cook and I see them crawling in my sink, I lose my appetite.)
I know I'm not the only one that fears murder, but that's the problem: I'm not. Especially in an era of technology, nobody wants to hold the job killing livestock. "A new campaign to bring young people into butchery, about two out of three butchers are facing succession difficulties and the average age of a butcher is now over 50 years old." When the butchers of the past generation pass away, who will then provide our meat? “'It’s a big worry. I’m part of the last generation of old-fashioned butchers, and we’ve brought a generation of customers with us.'” In Xanthe Clay's article, she writes about how a butcher who butchers the animals in plain view of customers. “'We’ve only had two complaints that it’s too in your face. And young kids are fascinated by it,' he says. 'They love seeing the whole carcase and finding out where their chops come from.'” I believe this is a good way to train a generation to be more connected with their food, whereas my generation has grown up being completely sheltered from this aspect of food culture.

Solution Starts From You

Right now in our society, most of us tend to blame someone if there is something wrong in our community. Most people blame the government for not fixing the problem at the first place before the problem spread out and become totally uncontrollable and epidemic. In this unit, our topic is about “foods”, specifically what’s inside the food, food engineering, and obesity. In the article of Mark Bittman, “Bad food? Tax it, and Subsidize Vegetables”, is about government taxing unhealthy food and lowering the price of vegetables. Bittman provided a great example; the government taxed the tobacco products and most people quit smoking. In my opinion, I think this solution would be very effective but people would not like it. I read this one article that says obesity rate is increasing and people propose a solution of making fast food companies to change the way they make their food. I think it is impossible for fast food companies to stop the food engineering because it has a lot of advantages. Whoever proposes a solution to this problem, the simplest solution starts from you, in yourself, by making the right choices of eating healthy food and exercising regularly. It is not hard thing to drink water instead of soda, or spend several minutes of hard work out a day. All of the results of this proper diet and proper exercise take a lot of time and effort but it will pay off eventually overtime. Losing weight takes huge dedication to achieve a fit body that every person deserves.
