Standard American Diet (SAD), it is sad

Many have heard the term "eat responsibly" but little actually do eat responsibly. The standard american diet causes many diseases today such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The main reason people are eating so irresponsibly is because healthy food is too expensive and junk food is cheaper; therefore more people are buying the cheaper food since it is more accessible. The correct solution to this issue is for the federal government to take action. In order to save the standard american diet from the corruption of the food industry is to subsidize healthy food and tax unhealthy food. Many studies have shown from various sources that if healthier foods are less expensive then the consumption and purchase of them increases and junk food consumption decreases. This proposition not only will help healthy choices but the obesity epidemic will start to decrease, rather than increase as it has been doing quite exceedingly over the past years. Plus this decrease in health risks will cause a major decline in health care costs, which can save billions of dollars. The money derived from the the taxation can be used to provide the subsidy for healthier alternatives.

  1. I agree with what you said about the tax policy. But what about the other factors that contribute to obesity. Location. For example.. Would taxing really help someone if they only have fast food by their house and all the gas money would over rule the healthy eating

    1. That's a good point, but if they really want to eat healthy, they could walk to the grocery store. They would be able to get their exercise that way and also be able to eat healthier. So then they wouldn't have to worry about gas money if they walked instead. They could invest in a rolling cooler, which is probably cheaper than buying gas, so they could easily carry their produce items.
