Where does it stop?
Animal rights have been a controversial issue for a long time; however, it has become more prevalent. Many are fighting for more and more animal rights. The GAP is one organization that is pushing for animal rights, specifically apes. They believe that "a basic set of moral and legal rights for chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans" should be provided. These rights include banning the use of apes in experiments, entertainment, and commercial ventures, and would set better living conditions for the apes. They even got Spain to implement their laws. But once these laws are given, where does it stop? Surely dogs, monkeys, rats, or any animal will be next. Someone will want rights for all of them. And then next, plants. If this were to happen it would effect the whole world. What animal rights activists fail to realize, is how much we need animal testing. We have created countless vaccines and cures from animal testing. If that were to stop, we would be putting millions at risk. I know that animals are creatures with feelings, but they are not human beings. They are still animals. So I do not believe that they should have all the same rights as us.

I am totally on board with you. I think that animals should be treated a little better, like no animal abuse; however, I don't think that they should, like you said, have the same rights as us because they don't have the same psychological abilities like humans do. We still don't know how pain affects them emotionally and in order to find that out, we need to do experiments on them. It would be better if the tests were not invasive, but we may need to do invasive tests on animals, like doing tests to find cures for HIV and cancer, etc. But after scientists are done running test and experiments on them, I think that we should put them in a retirement home like the one Ed Yong was talking about instead of putting them in cages. They deserve to live the rest of their life happy instead of rotting in some cage.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you animal abuse should not be tolerated. People shouldn't be able to use animals for a short period of just to make money, then leave them in a cage. Giving humans the right to mistreat these defenseless animals is wrong.Giving animals the same rights as us might be a huge step. MOst of the rights we have ,animals couldn't possibly follow.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. Animals do deserve the same rights as us, just not the exact same ones. It would be ridiculous to give animals the right to trial by jury. The testing is also completely necessary to help save human lives. People may also argue that testing on animals is wrong, and it is to a certain extent, but would you rather have potentially dangerous products be tested on humans or animals? Although animal testing should be limited to only medicinal use. Testing material things like make up products on animals should be stopped but testing for medicinal reasons should not.
