A Change of Heart about Animals
After reading this article I noticed that Jeremy Rifkins states that animals are very much like humans and we should change the way we treat them. Animals show human characteristics that overlook peoples attention. I agree with Jeremy Rifkin, although animals have human like qualities its inhumane to treat animals like they are inferior to us. Koko, the 300-pound, gorilla managed to master and understand 1,000 words in English. Koko also scored 70 out of 95 on a human IQ test. People shouldn't under estimate the abilities of animals. We should show animals differently because they are more like us than we think. Animals maintain great skills and abilities. We both express our emotions towards life. Animals feel excitement, stress, love, and are very affectionate.Animals should be treated differently because they show great qualities and don't do anything to deserve cruel treatment.

Hi Ashley. Your agreement with Jeremy Rifkin made me wonder...what does it mean to be human? Is it really inhumane to treat animals as inferior if in fact, they are not human? I agree that animals should be shown more respect especially with the evidence of their amazing abilities like with Koko the gorilla. Though there are those animals that seem to stand over the rest and reach out to our empathetic side, many are just living in nature to survive and reproduce. Once we integrate them into human society like putting them into the entertainment industry, that is where I believe the cruel treatment lies. It is the same thing with zoos. The only justification I see for humans to take animals away from their habitat and lock them in artificial playgrounds is if the animal is endangered and going extinct. Even that makes me question our intentions. Is that right for us to interfere with nature's course of the extinction of species or the creation of new species? Or is this our way to make up for all the harm and change we have made to the habitats of these animals? All creatures have great skills and abilities if we take the time to look and understand everything else that inhabits Earth. As long as we fulfill our obligation of coexisting with animals as best as we can without the superior, controlling mentality all the time, I think that gives the animals more of their natural rights rather than trying to define and draw up a set of rules and rights for them.
